After months of isolation, Isherwood “Ish” Williams learns that most of the world has been affected by a mysterious disease
But despite his instinct for further isolation, Ish leads the charge to create a new civilization based on the novel Earth Abides by George R. Stewart..
The version on my shelf has a 1947 copyright, but Wikipedia says 1949
Mentioned on Korman Productions’ Deep Dive TV podcast: Earth Abides on MGM+ Deep Dive Episode 1 “Alone” with Dave and Stacey (2024). The novel was written in the late 1940s, after the end of World War II.
The people he meets show how people can cope with these enormous losses
The impact of the story is that 80 years ago, someone wrote about a global pandemic and its potential impact on people. Ish represents the reader, the one who didn’t have to watch people die, watch the news, feel hopelessness and defeat.
This is very closely related to the poem of Ozymandias
Human fragility and the bravery of humanity in its achievements. I look forward to the rest of the episodes and to re-reading the novel.
